GENERAL THERAPY INFORMATION
We offer cognitive and behavioral treatments to improve the management of AD/HD across the lifespan.
We are able to work with children, adolescents, adults, couples and families.
In the first few session, we work to gain a good understanding of the presenting problem and we set treatment goals.
We develop an individualized treatment plan to help you achieve your goals.
The plan will include the strategies that will be taught and an estimate of the number of sessions required to obtain your goals.
Therapy session are generally about 50 minutes in length.
Frequency of sessions is negotiated as part of your treatment plan.
THERAPY FOR CHILDREN
Children with AD/HD can start learning skills to manage their AD/HD symptoms from the time they start school.
We teach children how to listen, reduce distractibility, control their impulses and to manage their chronic restlessness.
Children with social difficulties, anxiety, oppositional behaviour and learning difficulties are provided with strategies to mange these co-occurring problems.
We work closely with parents and classroom teachers to ensure the best outcome for children.
Parents are offered the opportunity to attend one of our parenting programs to help them learn the skills to support their child.
THERAPY FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
Young people with AD/HD often present with disorganisation and procrastination.
We provide young people with information about AD/HD so they can understand the barriers to their success.
We work with the young person to establish whether medication could help them succeed.
We teach strategies to improve study skills and achieve academic success.
Some young people join our Homework Organisation and Planning Skills Program.
Young people with social difficulties, anxiety, poor impulse control, internet addiction, oppositional behaviour and depression are provided with strategies to help manage these problems.
Whenever possible we work with families to address family conflict caused by AD/HD.
THERAPY FOR ADULTS
Adults with AD/HD often present with a complex mixture of symptoms and co-occurring social, work and relationship issues.
AD/HD frequently causes low self esteem and stress intolerance that have a negative impact.
We provide a clear model of AD/HD to help adults understand the symptoms of AD/HD and their impact.
We work with adults to develop clear treatment goals that will improve their day to day functioning.
Adults usually benefit from more structure and routine in their lives so we teach organisational skills and effective self care.
We work with adults to improve their self esteem and confidence.
Adults presenting with anxiety, depression, addictions and other commonly co-occurring issues are taught strategies to manage these problems.
THERAPY FOR COUPLES
AD/HD makes it difficult to listen, sustain effort, be organised and follow through.
Adults with AD/HD also can be impulsive and risk takers.
AD/HD can cause significant conflict in relationships.
Couple therapy is about understanding the impact of AD/HD and working out how to make the relationship work for both parties.
